PA 3.2 – Along Danube Bend

The Pilot Area is located in the northern part of Central Hungary, in section of Danube between Szob and Tass. The pilot area includes the municipality Budapest, the Szentendre Island, in north of it, and the Csepel Island, in south of the capital. On these islands are located the two most important bank-filtered drinking water resources of Hungary, that provide the drinking water supply of the capital.

Objective(s) of pilot actions / Aim of testing in the territorial level1. Agro Environment Program,
aim of testing: to clarify, if the load of nitrate decreases in the groundwater due to the changes in agricultural activities
2. Construction of the sewage system and devices for waste water treatment,
aim of testing: To examine the effectiveness of sewerage services and network connection ratios to the quality of the groundwater resources
3. Flood risk measures,
aim of testing: examination of the effectiveness of the measures to reduction of flood risk
Expected achievable results1. reduction groundwater's exposure and reduction the load of nitrate
2. better quality of drinking water resources
3. reduction of flood risk
Timeframe of implementation of achievable actions30.06.2018.
Deadline shifts could be possible, because of the holiday season. Data collection is more difficult from municipalities and waterworks.
Expected benefits for national/regional stakeholdersMunicipal Waterworks:
- Better quality of groundwater
- Better quality of drinking water
- lower point and diffuse contamination hazard
- less pressure on waterworks during flood events
- better raw water quality  waterworks have to make less effort (purification, disinfection)  cheaper drinking water supply service

DMRV (Regional Waterworks along the Danube River):
- Better quality of groundwater
- Better quality of drinking water
- lower point and diffuse contamination hazard
- less pressure on waterworks during flood events
- better raw water quality  waterworks have to make less effort (purification, disinfection)  cheaper drinking water supply service

Population of Budapest and agglomeration
- Better quality of drinking water
- cheaper drinking water supply service

Relevant National Parks
Requirements of water resource protection and nature conservation cover each other. The inner protection zones are undisturbed, and important for nature protection, and ecology.

National level
- The protection of drinking water resources is national strategy
- The drinking water is transferable to other areas
Expected benefits for local stakeholdersLocal governments:
- Less construction restrictions in or near the drinking water resources
Benefits of the Agro Environment Program for Local Farmers:
- Compensation: the program is compensated for the profit that is lost due to environmental friendly agriculture
- Compensation for the cultivation method changes
- Support for organic farming
Benefits of the construction of sewerage services and network for Local people
- Lower price for the service
- Wastewater removal
- Less construction restrictions in or near the drinking water resources
